"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.
It's not."

-Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Connecting with our Community

"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us 'universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." -Albert Einstein

The power of half

There are lots of ways to implement this powerfully simple principle of giving back half. I am committed to donating half of the revenues from my art to the community. You can read more about this great concept here

Commit $5 a month to a charitable group

Many organizations can do incredible things with $5! It can be overwhelming to think about giving because we know we simply don't have enough to solve the big problems, but in reality the big problems are really lots of small problems, problems we can effect. If you designate $5 a month, in one year your monthly donations will add up to $60 that helped our global community!

For instance, check out 3for5.org for clean water in the developing world, or commit to a cause close to home.

Request a ceramic mug or glass for your beverage when you are enjoying a drink in a shop.

Each shop has them; all you have to do is ask. Worst case scenario, you gotta run out of there and either toss your drink or grab a paper cup. Most times that won't happen!

Clean sweep and donate

Wouldn't we be happier with less clutter anyways? Less is modern, chic! If you love it and yet hide it under a bushel, either display it in your house to pass it on.

Generate the wish that it brings enjoyment to someone else and giving it away will even make you feel good.

Here are some organizations in Vancouver who would be happy to hear from you:

Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver
Developmental Disabilities Association
HomeStart Foundation

Rotate kids toys and clothes

New Westminster Family Place here in BC, Canada has a cool program where members can borrow a toy of their choosing for as long as they want, then bring it back and pick out another. Many are whole set ups which are very expensive new. They are cleaned after every lending- I know because I volunteer there and do it myself! Parents can come in and browse the lending library photos and pick out one. Kids always appreciate the novelty of it, for a time... then, when it becomes time for something new, the parents can just switch it again. It saves from having to rotate and keep lots of toys hidden or cluttering the house, and money, not to mention the environmental impact of all the consuming. See if there is one in your community. If there isn't, why not start one?

Reflect

How can we possibly take time out of a busy day to sit quietly? We already have so many moments perfect for that, actually, it's just that we just fill them up with apps and magazines and a million distractions. When you drive to the shop, walk the dog, even in the water closet, make a point of reflecting on your day, your week, your life. This is also a good moment to be grateful, because not matter what your circumstances are, as James Stevenson wrote, "It could be worse!"
